THE COMMONWEALTH

As we learned in our first presentation, the English language spread around the world due to the expansion of the British Empire in the 19th century. Britain's former colonies started fighting for their independence from the Crown in the late 40s of the 20th century, and the economic and military presence of the USA increased the importance of the the English language around the world.
